In March, 1983, The Daily Journal began printing USA Today and continues to print 80,000 to 100,000 copies each day. These copies are distributed as far west to Cedar Rapids, IA; south to Champaign, IL and Lafayette, IN; east to Sound Bend, IN; and north to Chicago, IL and parts of Michigan. The quality of reproduction on The Journal presses has won top awards in Gannett and other national printing competitions. Click here to view our USA Today staff.
The direct to plate process begins when content is received at The Journal via satellite. News content and Advertisements are received as separate files. These files are then paginated automatically into finished pages by Nensway Explorer software, pictured above, which was specifically designed for the USA today.
Paginated pages are then sent to one of two Berco Crescent placesetters. Inside the placesetter, plates are picked up, punched, imaged, and then sent through an Agfa developer. The finished plates are then ready for the press.
